Trending: Pros and Cons of Vessel Sinks

Home / Remodeling / Trending: Pros and Cons of Vessel Sinks

It’s like you’re walking into a spa inside your own home.

The trending vessel sink style not only adds a pop of elegance to your bathroom, it also serves as a simple way to completely transform the style of the room. Whether you’re looking for a way to revitalize your space or simply want an updated way of washing your hands, vessel sinks are a popular choice.

But before you go about ripping out your traditional sink in exchange for a modern basin, check out these pros and cons of vessel sinks. You might be surprised when you look into whether the purchase is right for your lifestyle.

Pros of Vessel Sinks:

Plenty of style – With their growing popularity in recent years, vessel sinks come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Rectangles, circles, sleek, vintage — the options are nearly endless.

Easier to swap out – Vessel sinks are much easier to swap out compared to traditional undermount sinks as they simply sit on top of a counter instead of being sealed underneath. A drain hole is virtually the same for any size vessel sink, so you can easily make the change to a different model down the line.

Free up counter space – Who doesn’t want a little extra space to set the hair dryer down or finally have enough room to share the bathroom in the morning? Vessel sinks free up a bit of counter space you’ll be glad to have.

Simple installation – With their easily changeable nature, vessel sinks are also fairly easy to install. Instead of a full counter cutout, most vessel sinks require a single hole drilled in the counter.

Cons of Vessel Sinks:

More cleaning – In addition to cleaning the inside of your sink, you’ll also be cleaning the outside of a vessel sink. Their modern look is appealing, but it also means a few extra minutes of cleaning.

Stability is questionable – Keep in mind this bowl is sitting on top of your counter, and not embedded into the counter. This makes vessel sinks slightly less durable and more susceptible to damage, especially on the edges. We’re not saying you could easily knock the bowl off the counter, but if you’re worried about kids pulling on it or other factors, you might want to hold off.

Questionable height – While taller individuals might appreciate the height of vessel sinks, kids could find it difficult to reach the sink as it’s sitting higher on the countertop than a traditional undermount sink.

More splashing – When you’re washing your hands in your contemporary sink, your bathroom might be prone to a little more splashing. While you can certainly minimize this with a proper height and size for your basin, it’s a small price to pay for making the switch.

Whether you’re ready for a new look or you need repairs on your traditional undermount sink, the experts at Benjamin Franklin Plumbing can guide you through the process. Our professionals are experts in sink and tub replacement and will work with you in fitting the process into your schedule. Give us a call today to schedule a visit with one of our punctual plumbers.
