How to Change Your Shower Head

Home / Plumbing / How to Change Your Shower Head

How to Change Your Shower HeadIf you’re tired of inconsistent water flow when you’re taking a shower, the problem might not be with your plumbing but with the shower head itself. Over time yours may have become clogged due to sediment or some other issue. Here’s some information on how to change your shower head. This is an easy job that most do-it-yourselfers should be able to complete relatively quickly.

How to Do it

1. Take off the existing shower head

One of the easiest steps when it comes so learning how to change a shower head is taking off the old unit. Get a pair of pliers or a wrench and hold the shower arm steady. Just be really careful not to fall into your shower glass panel and break anything! Loosen the nut located behind the shower head with your tool of choice, and then turn the nut manually to remove the shower head. You’ll need that tool again so keep it handy.

2. Clean the shower arm threads

Once the old shower head is off, clean the threads with a wire brush and make sure there is no debris left over. This will ensure that the new unit will fit securely and you won’t have to worry about any leaks.

3. Use plumber’s tape on the threads

You can get plumber’s tape at any local hardware store. You want to make sure that you use several layers and wrap them tightly around the threads.

4. Install the new shower head

Once again, you’ll need to make sure you hold on to the shower arm securely while performing this step. First, twist the new shower head a couple of times clockwise. You’ll need the pliers or wrench once again to get the shower head as tight as possible. Wrap a cloth around the shower head so you don’t scratch it.

5. Turn on the shower

This will be the big test, of course. If you don’t see any leaks, your job is done. If you do, however, you’ll need to take off the shower head and re-tape the threads. Re-attach the shower head and turn on the water again. Hopefully that will solve the problem and you’ll be finished. You’ll also want to take this time to listen for any possible leak behind your wall. If you hear water running even though you have turned your shower knobs to the “off” position, contact a plumber.
