Five Ways to Preserve Water Usage in Your Home

Home / Dallas TX Plumber / Five Ways to Preserve Water Usage in Your Home

Water ConservationWater is essential for life and clean living, but you should only use as much water as you need without wasting it. There are hundreds of ways to conserve water around your home, but even small changes in your water usage can make a big difference. Here at Benjamin Franklin Plumbing of Dallas, we understand how important water is in your daily life and how much it needs to be conserved. To begin to reduce your water consumption, focus on five ways to keep the amount of water you use in your home low. This can help you save money on your water bill while helping the environment.

1. Dispose of trash in the trash can or compost bin.
While you may be able to flush trash down the toilet or use your garbage disposal to wash away food waste, doing either of these wastes water. Instead of flushing garbage, use a trash can in the bathroom. This can also prevent drain clogs. A compost bin can be used or food waste. The resulting rich compost will help to give your garden a boost.

2. Garden with an eye to water-efficiency.
Make the most of water in your garden. Use plants that require a small amount of water to live. Consider reducing the size of your lawn with a rock garden or decorative landscaping. This lowers the amount of water you use to keep your yard and garden looking good. Water your plants only when needed and do so at night to prevent water lose from evaporation, and mulch around your plants to preserve moisture in the ground.

3. Check your plumbing system for leaks.
You do not need to know the exact location of a leak, just that one is present. To determine if you have one, shut off all the taps in your home and check the meter. A meter that continues to run indicates that water is still running in your home, probably from a leak. Call for our plumbing service in Frisco to fix it.

4. Install water efficient fixtures.
You can now find toilets, low-flow shower heads, and watering hoses that all use less water. If you need to replace one of these plumbing fixtures, do so with a more efficient model to save water.

5. Turn off the water when you don’t need it.
This includes shutting off the tap while you are brushing your teeth, lathering your hands with soap, and washing your hair in the shower. Though a small task, this is one way everyone in the house can help save water.
