DIY Tips to Save Money and Water This Summer

Home / Water Services / DIY Tips to Save Money and Water This Summer

If you have a leaky faucet, a hose that drips, or a showerhead that trickles–even when turned off!–you could be wasting water, money, and a very limited resource. The Environmental Protection Agency estimates more than 10,000 gallons of water are wasted in the average home each year. That’s water you are paying for. Thankfully, our Punctual Plumbers at Benjamin Franklin Plumbing have many tips and suggestions to help you find and fix those leaks.

3 DIY Tips to Save Money & Water This Summer

  • Tighten your washers and gaskets. For leaky faucets and showerheads: make sure your washers and gaskets are tight. Replace them if they are worn with newer, water-efficient options.
  • Check and replace rubber toilet flapper. The most common cause of a leaking toilet is often the inexpensive rubber flapper. Check for wear and replace if needed. This can be an easy DIY project, but keep in mind that plumbers have professional grade products that can outlast store-bought parts to help you save money.
  • Inspect your irrigation system and garden hoses. The spigot where the hose is attached to your home is a common area for leaks. Tighten or replace the rubber hose washer. You can also use tape to seal the leaking area or gently tighten with a wrench. Be sure to watch for over-tightening–you could damage your plumbing with too much pressure.

Fixing leaks around your home can be simple and cost-effective. If you ever need additional plumbing help or leak detection, contact a trusted plumbing professional. For more information on leaks and cost-saving water measures to save money, call your local Benjamin Franklin Plumbing.
