How to Extend the Life of Your Garbage Disposal

Home / Dallas TX Plumber / How to Extend the Life of Your Garbage Disposal

Garbage DisposalYour garbage disposal is probably one of those appliances that you don’t think about a great deal until something goes wrong. But there are some simple tips you could follow to extend the life of your unit. While garbage disposals typically last 10 years, following these tips could help you squeeze even more time out of it.

Preventing Rust

One thing that shortens the lifespan of a garbage disposal more than just about anything else is rust. However, you can help delay the onset of this problem by making sure you run the unit every time you put food in it. Over time, oils and acid from food can eat through the seals and lead to major issues.

Keep the Grease Out

Don’t ever pour leftover grease down your garbage disposal because it will eventually lead to clogs. If a clog gets bad enough, you’ll be better off purchasing a new unit rather than repairing it. Put your grease in a secure container and throw it away.

Clean Regularly

You might not look forward to trying to clean leftover food particles and other items from your disposal, but it’s necessary that you do so. Regular cleaning will not just reduce odors, it will also help your unit work more effectively. And it’s not like you need to get your hands dirty. Just pour some vinegar in an ice cube tray. Once it freezes, put a cube in the disposal and run the unit. Do this once every few days.

Always Use Water

This seems like a no-brainer, of course, but you’d be surprised just how often people run their disposal without water. If you don’t, the teeth will not be able to grind up waste as effectively and the motor could easily overheat.

If you have questions regarding how to get the most out of your garbage disposal or you need any type of plumbing repair service, the experts with Benjamin Franklin Plumbing Dallas are ready to help. Contact us online or give us a call at (214) 989-4212.
